Social Science looks at why and how we live the way we do. The social sciences look at society and social behaviour to understand, explain and change human behaviour to positively transform the lives of individuals, families and communities.
Social Scientists work in diverse social environments to identify issues and develop strategies for solutions to social problems. Nationally and globally there is a demand for social scientists who are able to understand the complex and changing needs of societies in the face of technological, economic and social changes that constantly affect the smallest of communities to the largest of continents.
This degree
The UOW Bachelor of Social Science involves a common foundation of compulsory social science subjects in first year, followed by a major in one of our specialisations. In third year you'll have the opportunity to undertake work integrated learning, where you'll gain vital community experience. You can complement your degree with a wide range of elective subjects or by adding a minor study area from any field in the University offering cross-faculty enrolment.
You can also study abroad, or stay local and undertake activities to build your cross-cultural communication skills through our Global Communicators program.

Course Learning Outcomes
Students graduating from the Bachelor of Social Science will be able to:
Integrate knowledge and understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences and social science practice.
Consolidate and synthesise theoretical and practical knowledge of the dynamics of social systems and practices in different settings and apply this to their chosen speciality.
Inquire into the dynamics of particular social problems and practices using established social science protocols consistent with their speciality.
Inquire into and address ongoing learning needs.
Analyse unpredictable, complex problems, issues and situations; apply creative, logical and critical thinking skills; and form evidence-based judgements regarding possible solutions.
Articulate ideas using a wide range of techniques effective with different audiences, including experts and non-experts.
Work collaboratively with a range of people in different cultural, cross-cultural and regional contexts to best effect desired and desirable social change.
Recognise the importance of ethical practice, social responsibility, social justice and civic awareness when acting to resolve conflicts, address problems and respond to social and environmental challenges.

UOW recognizes secondary qualifications from more than 40 countries and education systems, including GCE A levels, International Baccalaureate and SAT, and can assess students who have completed the equivalent of Australian high school (Year 12) for direct entry to the first year of a Bachelor degree. English language requirements: IELTS - 6.0; TOEFL - 79, Pearson PTE - 57.

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science. English Language Requirements: IELTS Academic Overall Score of 6.5, reading 6.0, writing 6.0, listening 6.0, speaking 6.0; TOEFL (Internet-based) score of 88, reading 18, writing 18, listening 18, speaking 18; Cambridge English: CAE and CPE score of 176; PTE Academic overall score of 64 (Minimum communicative skill score of 57).
