Biology is the study of living things. Biologists study organic molecules, cells, tissues, individual organisms, populations, and communities. Biologists use the latest scientific knowledge, tools and techniques in both laboratory and outdoor settings to develop solutions across the areas of biodiversity, conservation, ecology, evolution, genetics, medical research, and molecular biology. The Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences) incorporates field and laboratory studies in appropriate subjects at all levels and takes advantage of UOW's modern laboratories, and the superb local marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments on the South Coast and inland regions. What you will study You will study the major concepts and technologies of modern biology, including the biology of the cell, the structure of DNA, ecology of populations and communities, evolutionary biology and the origin of species, organisms, their classification and lifestyles. You will choose to focus on one of the following major study areas: Biochemistry Molecular Biology Cell Biology Immunology Comparative Physiology Terrestrial Ecology Marine Biology Evolutionary Biology Environmental Biology In addition, the degree offers flexibility, allowing you to choose electives from other areas of study at UOW that can be tailored to your interests. On completion, high performing students considering further study or a career in research should consider the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program. This one-year degree offers students a pathway to expand their knowledge of biological sciences and achieve their research aspirations.
