Prepares students to be able to make a positive contribution to enhancing the health of communities. Health science is the study of the physical, psychological, social, and environmental dimensions of health. Students graduate with practical and theoretical knowledge and skills in communication, teamwork, critical thinking, innovation, and cross-cultural and international awareness. They are highly sought after and can choose a range of interesting and dynamic career pathways. Students can choose to undertake two eight-unit majors, or a major and minor, in these disciplines: Addiction Studies, Environmental Management, Health Promotion, Nutrition, Occupational Safety and Health. Alternatively, students can undertake one 16-unit major in Nutrition Bioscience or Environmental Health. A minor in Youth Work is also available. Course structure Students are required to complete a Core unit set. This will be supported by a supplementary program comprising of: two 8-unit Majors; or an 8-unit Major, plus a 6-unit Minor and 2 Elective units; or a 16-unit specialised Major. Note: Majors and Minors are selected from the Bachelor of Health Science. Alternate options require approval of the Course Coordinator. Environmental Health Major Designed to develop skills in the quantification and assessment of environmental health risks and public health safety. Learning Outcomes Apply creative and innovative solutions in communities that may be experiencing environmental or public health risks. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the biological mechanisms of human disease. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge and skills in the assessment of environmental health risks and public health safety. Demonstrate international and cultural awareness and understanding of individual and collective human rights at both a national and global level. Demonstrate knowledge of sustainable practices to apply appropriate environmental management strategies to control diseases in communities. Exercise critical thinking and judgment to identify and solve problems that may arise within communities that will potentially affect the environmental and local population's health. Explain the importance of cultural diversity and sensitivity (including Indigenous cultural awareness) when collaborating with communities. Reflect and set goals related to professional development and continued learning. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge relating to environmental health risks and public health safety. Use and analyse environmental health data to make decisions about and solve problems related to the planning and implementation of appropriate environmental health interventions. Use professional communication skills and work collaboratively to enable the exchange of information with colleagues, practitioners, clients, policy-makers, interest groups and the public. Utilise relevant levels of technology, information and English language skills to identify, access and compile relevant and appropriate information in different environmental health contexts.
