This program provides an opportunity to obtain two professional degrees. It allows students to add the professionally recognised Law program to the professionally accredited City Planning (Hons) program offered by the Faculty of Built Environment. Duration/Award The program is a 6.5-year full-time combined program leading to the award of the two degrees of Bachelor of City Planning (Hons) and Bachelor of Laws (BCP (Hons) LLB). In general, this study is taken concurrently with the BCP (Hons) program and both can be completed in a minimum of 6.5 years, including a work integrated practice year as part of BCP (Hons) requirements in year 4. Learning Outcomes City Planning (Honours) Implement systematic and specialised knowledge and analytical skills to reach appropriate evidence based decisions to inform planning issues and actions Apply critical thinking skills and synthesise complex information in order to address multi-scalar challenges and perspectives shaping space and place Apply concepts and principles of urban planning in practice Examine and evaluate international issues, perspectives and opportunities within their field of study Develop innovative, multidisciplinary and integrative plans to facilitate and influence appropriate social, economic and environmental outcomes Plan and execute a significant piece of independent research relevant to the planning discipline and profession Communicate and work effectively with a range of stakeholders to inform, consult and engage them in planning processes Demonstrate cultural awareness, environmental and social responsibility, and a respect for diversity Practice professional and ethical conduct and personal accountability consistent with the expectations of the planning profession and the community when engaged in planning roles and activities Law Interpret and analyse statutes, for example: Navigating and applying statutory enactments in accordance with contemporary modes of statutory interpretation; Applying knowledge of the difference between interpretation of statutes and constitutions; Applying knowledge and ability to use extrinsic materials in the interpretation of statutes; Developing a coherent body of knowledge and skills about the rules of statutory interpretation; The application of statutory interpretation techniques in the context of problem-solving to generate appropriate analytical responses to statutory issues; Analysing the relationship between statutory interpretation and human rights instruments in different jurisdictions. Demonstrate and adopt professional and ethical dispositions and values, for example: Professional disposition and values; Developing ability to exercise professional judgment; Ability to reflect on professional responsibilities of lawyers in promoting justice; Understanding the law's role in serving society; Understanding the value of community engagement; Ethical practice; Understanding of ethical approaches to decision-making; Developing ability to respond to ethical issues arising in legal practice; Working sensitively with clients from diverse backgrounds and with a range of needs; Understanding prosecutors' and advocates' obligations both to the court and to the client, and judicial obligations to ensure a fair trial. Conduct legal research and writing, for example: Professional research skills; Academic research skills; Concise writing; Extended writing (research assessment tasks with a word length of 3,000 words or more); Professional writing. Demonstrate professional interpersonal skills, for example: Collaboration skills; Ability to work as a member of a team; Respect for diversity; Dispute resolution; Understanding of formal legal rules;
