Energy and resources are dominant in the Australian economy, and management of these resources presents formidable legal challenges for governments and private enterprise at global, national and local levels.
The Master of Energy and Resources Law (MEnergy&ResourcesLaw)is part of the world-renowned Melbourne Law Masters program. It’s available for both law and non-law graduates and the flexible structure makes it ideal for working professionals looking to immerse themselves in the study of energy and resources law.
Working with lecturers who are leaders in their fields, and fellow students from Australia and around the world, you’ll have a unique opportunity to gain advanced understanding of energy and resources law, the regimes governing exploration and production activities and resolution of land-use and resources conflicts.
Course structure
Students must complete eight subjects in total.
Students who do not have a law degree from a common law jurisdiction must complete Fundamentals of the Common Law, as well as seven subjects from the prescribed list.
Students with a law degree from a common law jurisdiction must complete at least seven subjects from the prescribed list and may choose an eighth subject from those available in the Melbourne Law Masters (excluding Fundamentals of the Common Law).
As a Master of Energy and Resources Law student, you’ll develop an advanced understanding of the complex body of knowledge in the field of energy and resources relations law, including:
an in-depth knowledge of the specialist area of energy and resources law and associated disciplinary areas
detailed knowledge of the complex law and regulation in the field
the capacity to identify new laws and/or apply existing law in the rapidly evolving legal context for energy and resources
advanced understanding of developments in international energy and resources law

Graduate coursework programs normally require the satisfactory completion of an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. English language requirements: IELTS (academic English Only) - 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (paper-based test) - 600 + TWE 5.0; TOEFL (internet-based test) - 94 + (Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13); Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 65 + written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50; Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) - 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.

An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline; and successful completion of four subjects in a cognate graduate diploma and one year of documented relevant professional experience.
