The Master of Construction Management is a professional degree for graduates wanting to become leaders in the construction industry. Construction Management is a discipline that incorporates areas of technical endeavour seeking to improve our ability to manage industrial structures, fabrication and procurement processes, and the output of buildings. In line with the mission of the Melbourne School of Design, graduate studies in Construction Management integrate the present requirements of professional training and education with the future needs of the industry. This degree rests as much on practice as it does on theory. The program focuses on real-world projects which range the full construction management cycle, preparing students for the realities of professional life. You will gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills to manage the social, technological, financial and environmental challenges facing the construction industry today. Whether you are starting your career in construction or coming from industry to further develop your expertise, you will find a specialisation that suits your career aspirations. You can choose to specialise in: Building Cost management Project management You will take a concentration of core and elective subjects focussed on your chosen area of specialisation. If you are undertaking the three-year program, you will first complete a series of compulsory construction subjects. The Master of Construction Management is a 300 point or 3-year program. The first 100 points (1 year) is made up of foundation study tailored to students from non-construction backgrounds. Students from cognate backgrounds such as construction management and semi-cognate backgrounds such as Architecture or Civil Engineering will often have completed appropriate studies that will allow them to receive credit for up to the first year of the program, reducing the duration to 2 or 2.5 years. Graduates of the Master of Construction Management will: Be able to demonstrate a high level of technical understanding of the design of buildings and associated construction processes and solutions Have an understanding of a broad range of management theory underpinning its practical application in the delivery of construction projects to meet the client’s cost, time, aesthetic, functional and operational requirements Recognise and understand how projects are evaluated, structured and delivered in terms of risk allocations and contractual obligations Be problem solvers, able to research, analyse, evaluate and discuss a wide range of construction technologies and management strategies applicable to the practice of construction management Understand the principles and practices of managing, motivating and leading people who work in construction project teams. 300 Point Entry All students must complete: 100 points of first-year core subjects. 125 points of core specialisation subjects. 25 points of specialisation electives. 50 points of multidisciplinary electives. 200 Point Entry All students must complete: 125 points of core specialisation subjects. 25 points of specialisation electives. 50 points of multidisciplinary electives. Specialisations All students are required to complete one of the following specializations after completing the compulsory 100-point first-year program.
