Urban Planning as an academic discipline is the study of how cities grow and change, and of the application of policy tools that can guide that towards a viable, resilient and healthy future. Students majoring in Urban Planning learn about the historical evolution of cities and of the discipline in a global perspective; the responsibilities of the profession, and how cities are planned and governed. They learn to critically consider a plurality of perspectives in envisioning future cities. Urban Planning students also learn essential skills such as plan making, policy analysis, and technical writing in both urban and regional contexts.
Learning in the Urban Planning course is broad and interdisciplinary. Students develop the above skills and knowledge through a variety of pedagogical formats, including lectures, tutorials, , fieldworks, and problem-based studios. The city is the laboratory, and students will engage with fellow students from around the world.
Careers and Further Study: Professional urban planners conceive and implement policy in a variety of areas, including land use, urban form, social infrastructure, transport, economic development, and public open space. The undergraduate major in Urban Planning is a pre-professional course designed to provide the basic skills and theoretical knowledge to undertake an accredited professional program like the Master of Urban Planning or Master of Urban Design.
Course structure
The Bachelor of Design requires the successful completion of 23 to 24 subjects (300 credit points). Full-time students usually study eight subjects each year for three years. Most subjects are worth 12.5 credit points, but some are worth 25 credit points.

To be eligible for entry to an undergraduate degree you must fulfill all of the following requirements: Complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or an equivalent Australian or overseas qualification like Australian Year 12, Trinity College Foundation Studies, GCE 'A' Levels, International Baccalaureate. English language requirements: TOEFL - Paper based test - a score of 577 or more including a score of 4.5 in the Test of Written English. Internet based test - a score of 79 and scores of: Writing: 21, Speaking: 18, Reading: 13, Listening 13. IELTS (Academic) - an overall band score of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0. Pearson Test of English (Academic) - an overall score of between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50. Cambridge English: Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - A Cambridge English Score of 176 with no skill below 169.
