Sociology engages with central dimensions of life in contemporary societies, from transformations in the life course, contemporary families, gender relations, ethnic, racial and sexual identity, and the body, through to media, new technologies and globalisation. It engages with emerging patterns of social inequality and new forms of social problems, and the ways in which people and societies confront these new challenges. Sociology also explores emerging questions of action and identity – from new social movements to subcultures to forms of action evident in contemporary social transformations. The majority of Arts Majors require 100 points of study for attainment. This means out of the 300 point program, you have the opportunity to achieve two Majors in your course. Along with this, the Faculty of Arts offers a variety of Breadth Subjects designed to enhance your learning with options from a variety of fields. Students completing a Major in Sociology must complete: One Level 1 Elective subject One Arts Foundation subject (MULT10018 Power recommended) One Level 2 Compulsory subject 25 points from Level 2 Electives subjects One Level 3 Capstone subject 25 points from Level 3 Electives subjects Students completing a Minor in Sociology must complete: One Level 1 Elective Subject One Arts Foundation subject (MULT10018 Power recommended) 25 points from Level 2 Elective Minor subjects 25 points from Level 3 Electives Minor subjects Career outcomes A major in sociology allows you to explore human relationships in a fascinating career. INDUSTRIES AND ROLES You could, for example, become a sociologist, working to understand human relationships in varying contexts and improve communities. You could also work on a government level in policy development, where you’ll understand the roots of social issues and recommend ways to alleviate them. RESEARCH You could continue to explore the complexities of your chosen research field through academia and research.

English language requirements: TOEFL - Paper based test - a score of 577 or more including a score of 4.5 in the Test of Written English. Internet based test - a score of 79 and scores of: Writing: 21, Speaking: 18, Reading: 13, Listening 13. IELTS (Academic) - an overall band score of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0. Pearson Test of English (Academic) - an overall score of between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
