The Sydney Dental School offers the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) undertaken in one of a range of dental specialisations or disciplines. The PhD is aimed at those who intend to pursue academic careers in oral health. This is a research-based degree in which students undertake supervised research in the discipline of dentistry. The four-year, full-time program offers students the chance to work with a supervisor who, through their own research, is actively contributing to the development of new knowledge and understanding in the field of dentistry. The PhD comprises research and writing toward a thesis of 80,000 words. Candidates are not normally required to attend classes or to undertake coursework units of study, with the thesis being the only or major examinable assessment requirement for the degree. PhD students are based primarily at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health and Sydney Dental School and benefit from their peers, teachers and the wider health community that is accessible through the University.
