Use technology to produce world-class medical imaging and provide excellent patient care. In the Bachelor of Applied Science (Diagnostic Radiography) you will learn to use high tech equipment ranging from small mobile X-ray machines to larger units; from MRI and CT scanners to sophisticated cardiac units, enabling timely and accurate patient diagnoses. As a diagnostic radiography student, you will learn to work closely with other medical and allied health practitioners and to employ a range of technologies to produce medical images that will, to create images that can help provide an accurate diagnosis and sound patient care. Diagnostic radiographers work closely with cardiologists in imaging heart disease, with surgeons during a range of operations, and with emergency doctors in the emergency room. During this four year degree, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of radiography including imaging technology, radiographic science and radiographic evaluation. You will undertake significant clinical and professional fieldwork opportunities, providing hands-on experience with real clients in a supervised environment. This allows you to combine the academic components of the course with the practical abilities required of the profession. This degree program is accredited by the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA) and is an approved program of study for general registration as a diagnostic radiographer. Completion of this course, and then gaining registration by the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia, will enable you to work as a diagnostic radiographer. Graduates have the opportunity to work in a range of settings, such as small regional clinics, large metro imaging departments, and emergency wards. Course opportunities An essential component of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Diagnostic Radiography) is clinical education. It provides an opportunity for the student to integrate the knowledge acquired in the professional units of study with the practical skills attained in the workplace. To broaden the student's clinical skills, candidates are placed in a variety of radiology centres to enable a breadth of experience in procedures, examinations and equipment. In year 3 semester 2 candidates have the opportunity to take part in the FHS Abroad program which involves academic study and a four to six week placement with non-government organisations and other development agencies in one of a small number of countries in South and South East Asia. This 6 credit point unit of study offers a hands-on understanding of global health challenges in an overseas community through work with two well established Australian volunteer agencies. Careers & future study Graduate opportunities Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Sciences (Diagnostic Radiography) are required to apply for registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia before being employed as a diagnostic radiographer. Diagnostic radiographers work in the hospital system and private practice both in Australia and overseas, subject to local registration requirements. In the radiology department, graduates will usually work with a range of practitioners such as radiologists and nurses, and outside the department they may work with a range of medical and allied specialists in a variety of areas such as intensive care, theatre and emergency departments. Graduates have the opportunity to work in a range of settings, such as small regional hospitals, large metro imaging departments and private radiology centres.
