This course is designed for native speakers of Chinese who have a high level of competence in English and wish to develop this further. This interdisciplinary course combines the theoretical, technological and practical training necessary for effective translation between English and Chinese. It also offers training and practice in bi-lateral interpreting between the two languages. The MA is also open to native speakers of English who have a high level of competence in Chinese. The course is taught between the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies and the Centre for English Language Education, thereby drawing on the individual strengths and expertise available within each school. In addition, students will be ideally placed to embark on a research career – either within the UK, where contemporary China this is a rapidly expanding area of interest, or at a Chinese research institution. Students will also have the communication skills necessary to pursue a career in any area that requires an in-depth knowledge of contemporary China and the Chinese language, such as large multi-national corporations operating in China, as well as Chinese companies operating outside of the country.
