Biological sciences is an exciting and rapidly developing field, bringing together knowledge, ideas and techniques from all areas of biology to allow us to expand our understanding of the human body and its interplay with the environment. Our MSci in Biological Sciences is designed to develop your understanding of the processes underlying life and health in whole organisms, focusing particularly on humans. Biological Sciences (MSci) draws on the University's multidisciplinary expertise in areas like regenerative medicine, health, nutrition and physical activity, and its reputation for scientific rigour and cutting-edge research. The MSci makes excellent preparation for a career in research or PhD study. Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination. For example, module may be 25% coursework and 75% examination. Other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination. Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, laboratory work, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations. By undertaking a year in placement or a year abroad, you will gain an additional award alongside your final qualification. If you complete an industrial placement year you will gain a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS). If you undertake a professional placement year you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or if you study abroad for a year you will gain a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS). A biological sciences degree has a natural fit with the science and health sectors and provides wide-ranging skills including communication and problem solving. There are no graduates from this course as yet. However, example career destinations may include: medical and veterinary product development; quality assurance and sales; product development and testing in the pharmaceutical industry; in medical laboratories; the biotechnology industry; environmental organisations such as consultancies and charities; and in local government and non-government organisations, as well as teaching and research. A biological sciences degree also provides a good background for careers involving scientific marketing, sales or writing, as well as broader graduate careers.
