This MA in English Literary Studies is the most flexible of all our MAs and the only one that allows you to select modules from across the whole range offered by the Department. You will develop an understanding of the engagement of English literature with a range of political, social and aesthetic issues: the cultural meanings and associations of the variety of styles, genres and media in which English literature was produced; and a range of different critical and theoretical perspectives on advanced literary study. Our postgraduates go into academia and teaching, arts administration, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, social work, politics, the civil service, and management consultancy. Many alumni have also gone on to become successful novelists, poets and playwrights.

Students would normally need a bachelors degree from a recognised institution in a relevant subject. The score they will need depends on which university you attended in China and which subject you are applying to. Typically you would need at least the equivalent to a UK upper second class honours degree, however some courses will accept lower second class honours degrees. Actual requirements will vary by course. A score of 80-85% is considered comparable to a UK 2:1 and a score of 75-80% is considered comparable to a UK 2:2.

Applicants whose first language is not English need to provide evidence of their english language ability with IELTS score of 7.0, no less than 6.0 in Listening and Speaking, a minimum of 6.5 in Reading, and of 7.0 in Writing
