University of Tasmania (UTAS)Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering)

专业简介

This program of study is provided for students who intend to embark on a career in the maritime industry as Marine Engineer Officers on commercial vessels. It provides the knowledge and skills required to safely manage, facilitate, and undertake operation and maintenance linked to the shipboard marine engineering systems. Course content includes marine engineering and systems, vessel structure and operations, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation, marine survey and shipboard safety. The program is designed to integrate with professional short courses and training at sea so that successful students will not only obtain an Bachelors' degree in Marine Engineering but also an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Certificate of Competency. The program is fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), as amended in 2010 (The amendment took place in Manila in 2010). On completion of their second year, students who wish or need to exit from their studies will be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Marine Engineering if they have met the requirements for the award. Overseas students with approved prior learning may enter directly into Year 2 or Year 3 of the program by enrolling in the Advanced Diploma or Bachelors' degree as appropriate. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of marine engineering by: Applying a diverse array of scientific concepts to safely operate and maintain the main propulsion system in a commercial ship. Determining the appropriate role of auxiliary and shipboard systems in multiple contexts to ensure the safe operation of a commercial ship. 2. Critically analyse and solve marine engineering related problems by: Analysing, interpreting and evaluating a range of available data sources in standard- operational and emergency related scenarios on a commercial ship. Implementing regulatory appropriate responses which enable the continued safe operation of a commercial ship. 3. Practice effective leadership in marine engineering by: Establishing how various management theories can be applied in common marine engineering roles. Exhibiting communication, collaboration and decision making which enable safe operation of a commercial ship. 4. Demonstrate personal and professional stewardship through: Locating and adhering to regulatory frameworks relevant to marine engineering in the international shipping industry. Performing all tasks in an ethical manner where the safety of persons and protection of the natural environment are of the greatest importance. Career outcomes The Bachelor of Applied Science Marine Engineering is the recognised pathway to becoming an AMSA certified marine engineering officer. This degree provides additional knowledge and skills that will be of benefit to students seeking a career at sea. The degree will also equip professional engineering officers with the additional knowledge and skills that they are likely to require to take up senior shore-based professional positions such as: Governmental or intergovernmental regulators and organisations such as AMSA, EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency), IMO (International Maritime Organization) Senior position in a shipyard Technical manager in a shipping company Marine superintendent or safety manager in a shipping company Product, R&D, sales and service managers in companies manufacturing marine engines and equipment Surveyor in a Classification Society Marine Surveyor with a Port State Control authority such as AMSA Work in Marine insurance companies Maritime Education and Training, research and teaching positions
