The Associate Degree in Applied Science (Marine Environment) is offered by the IMAS (Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies) North and is available at Launceston. This course provides an innovative translational science approach to the educational experience in Australia with a broad introductory exposure to the areas of natural sciences, social sciences, technology, management and electives that include economics and policy, and law. Students choose two areas of study to specialise in from the five specialisations on offer: Aquaculture, Aquatic Science, Aquatic Biology, Fisheries Management, Marine Conservation.
Graduates will be able to:
Apply their disciplinary knowledge effectively in the work force
Analyse critical factors that affect the management of the ocean and coastal environment and marine resources
Apply a broad range of generic/transferable skills in other areas of endeavour
Continue their learning by applying academic skills engendered from their studies
Students successfully completing the Associate Degree of Applied Science (Marine Environment) are eligible to articulate into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment); students may be eligible to receive up to 12 units of advanced standing towards the Bachelor degree.
Course objectives
This course aims to:
Provide graduates with a broadly based education in the marine environment to a level equivalent to the first three semesters (1.5 hrs) of a three-year bachelor degree.
Provide students with the skills and knowledge required to progress successfully to a three-year degree. Students wishing to transfer to a bachelor degree should confer with the relevant Course Coordinator concerning the requirements
Recognise (via an early exit option) the level of study achieved by Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) students who wish to exit prior to completion of the three-year Bachelor degree course

Students meeting the University of Tasmania's General Entry Requirements may enter the course. Entry may be achieved through a variety of pathways including:
Satisfactory achievement (SA) or better in a minimum of four pre-tertiary subjects preferably including English, Mathematics and a Science subject.
Completion of a vocational certificate III or higher in a relevant discipline.
Relevant industry experience may be given special consideration.
