If you have a bachelor degree in a public health related discipline, the Master of Public Health at the University of Newcastle can provide you with the advanced expertise to launch your career in public health.
By studying the Master of Public Health at the University of Newcastle, you will learn to monitor the health of a population, identify its health needs, and develop and implement policies that promote health, and evaluate health services. You will study topics including biostatistics, epidemiology, social and ecosystem health, health systems and policy, and health promotion.
Upon completion of the program you will be equipped to function as a health educator, health promotion officer or in a range of public health roles in government, private or not-for-profit agencies. Choose to study full-time or part-time to suit your needs as well as your preferred learning mode including face-to-face at Newcastle (Callaghan) or study online.

The Master of Public Health will provide you with a comprehensive education at a superior level. Designed for individuals who have already successfully completed a bachelor degree in an approved public health related discipline, you will be required to complete eight courses, four of which are compulsory. These courses will have you studying:
biostatistics – where you will be introduced to basic statistical concepts in data presentation, probability distributions, confidence intervals hypothesis testing, sample size and power. You will learn to understand statistical reasoning and its application to epidemiological studies as well as read and critically evaluate the statistical section of journal articles.
epidemiology – which will introduce you to the basic concepts including the distribution and determinants of disease in specific populations and the application of this knowledge to the evaluation and control of health problems in the community.
public health – you will learn the biological, social and environmental causes and patterns in disease in populations, as well as gain an understanding of economic and political processes in determining evidence-based interventions to address those diseases of significance within populations.
social and ecosystem health - this course draws together two important emerging areas of public health: social determinants of health inequality and the ecosystem health perspective (ecohealth). You will come to understand the social and ecosystem causes of human disease which is essential for developing and implementing effective public health policies.

International students, a four year bachelor degree including a significant research training component attained at a high standard, is commonly considered equivalent to an Australian honours degree. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 57 with no score subtest score less than 50; Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) score of 52 - 57; TOEFL paper based test 525 min of 4 in TWE. Additional requirements: Applicants with ATAR of 90 or above are also eligible.

Minimum of a four year undergraduate degree in a field related to public health such as medicine, biomedical/medical science, nursing, allied health, dentistry, psychology, veterinary science, education, law, engineering, business, commerce, science and arts. Applicants with a three year undergraduate degree should possess an Honours degree or additional postgraduate qualifications such as a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma; or a minimum of one year’s work experience in a related field.
English language requirements: TOEFL score of 550 in TWE (Test of Written English) minimum of 4.5 in the paper-based test; TOEFL internet based score of 93 and no subtest less than 21; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 no subtest less than 6.0; PTE score of 64 with no subtest less than 59; CAE score of 58-66; ELICOS Exam[i] score of Higher Level Pass 4 (HP4) in EAP exam; CPE score of C Pass.
